Do referee's knowingly even the game up sometimes when they've made mistakes?

Following on from the chat about yesterday's ref and some of his decisions, have you ever noticed a ref that seems to be having a bad game, when what he might be doing is balancing the game out for making an earlier bad decision which might have led to a goal?

we had some dire refs in recent games

they are woeful and inept and damaging the game
ref waved pen away, linesman gave it and no card!!
