    3 points off mathematical safety

Spent a while on this so it could do with checking!

If we lose all our remaining games we end with 50 points. Burton and Sunderland can’t catch us. If Barnsley and Bolton were to win all their remaining games, Barnsley have a maximum of 55, and Bolton 54. But they have to play one another, so one of their maximums reduces by 3 points if they lose. So that’s either Barnsley 55 Bolton 51, or Barnsley 52 Bolton 54. A draw would give Barnsley 53, and Bolton 52.

So, if we gain 3 points, our final total is 53 and either Barnsley will have less (52 in they lose the final game), or Bolton (51 if they lose or 52 if it’s a draw).

Although we currently have a superior goal difference losing the next 5 games that would fall to at least -17. Barnsley winning 6 games would improve theirs above that. Bolton would have to win by an average of 2 goals to be close at -18.

Realistically, neither Barnsley nor Bolton are going to do that, and we’ll collect a few points from the remaining games.

So we will still be a Championship side next season

    Breathe easy.

Actually no points off mathematical safety! Well done Ollie and the lads. Not sure what to do with the last tense month of the Season! Don’t like beaches much.

Are we mathematically out of the battle for 6th place too?
