  • Fantasy versus reality

Perhaps the most frustrating thing this season is we have on paper an abundance of attacking quality in midfield and in theory should be tormenting every team we play week in week out. Fer, Phillips, Chery and Hoillet. You'd be quite happy with a choice of those in the Premiership potentially.

However the reality is no matter what we think should happen it doesn't work. We are disjointed and don't create anything like enough. We don't control possession.

It hasn't helped we have been so bare up front with sometimes struggling to have more than one striker available limiting the options the various managers have had.

Maybe we need to accept that whilst it is good to have the option of those players that we should be just playing 4-4-2 with Washington and BFG and picking just two of those midfielders. I know Fer and Hoillet do better playing behind the striker than on the wing but the formation we have doesn't work consistently enough for us to persevere with unless there is a big improvement.

As JFH is looking for an additional striker we will hopefully see a bit more of two up top. We need to start building for next season and beyond and it is likely at least two of those four players will not be with us next season anyway so may as well start setting the team up for that and mixing things up a bit.
