There was a thread on this on LFW a few weeks back with a VERY interesting link. There is an extremely sophisticated statistical model underlying how Brentford identify talent - a model that has been used successfully in Europe. If we just do it by the seat of our pants it is very likely that they will be much better at it than we are.

Ankersen is chairman of FC Midtjylland, the Danish Superliga side who are also owned by Benham.
The Herning-based club are on the verge of winning the Danish title following a 2-0 win over FC Copenhagen on Sunday.
Giles works for Benham's company, Smartodds, which provides statistical sports modelling services, and has been its head of quantitative sports research since 2010.
"The director of football role is a big one and splitting it means we can add the expertise of both of them to our management structure," Benham told the club website.
"I have worked with Rasmus at FC Midtyjlland and many of the methods we will be using at Brentford are already showing much promise there.
"Phil is someone who has excellent football knowledge and the analytical skills to assess players, tactics and teams in the way we want to."

Interesting. English football still stuck in the old 'arry Redknapp style is so far behind in many ways. As an employee of Smartodds, I can't really afford to tell you much, but having seen some the data the company has built up over the last few years. QPR are not in a position to compete whatsoever on this side of things.

The key to making this work is in deciding which players to pick.
Brentford are using a statistical model which has proven so successful in Denmark that it has lifted FC Midtjylland to their first ever Danish title. And it has also proved successful at Brentford.

I think its meant as a finical statement the way Brentford has worked over the last 3 seasons , they haven't gone out and spent big , which they could have as they have very wealthy owners behind them, and they have used there scouts to bring in young players and trusted the management team to produce these youngster Rosler / Warburton ,that's how this club wants to start running its football operation. Not picking players from any sort of statistics base or whatever they are doing as i totally disagree with that, good old fashioned scouting players with your eyes is still the very best way to pick players, stats like you tube clips can be made to show anything you like.Comment
