We have had a few discuss threads recently and given its closed season thought it might be worth is trying to get our mouths round this

Suggestions on twitter that the ref yesterday was allegedly chosen by them to ensure a home win given his inexperience and that FIFA will do what they can to ensure England don't come out the group (personally think that's the siege mentality coming out from some or there getting the excuses in early)

I think there are certainly questions to be answered about hands allegedly being greased for voting of presidents and tournaments but not sure I believe they fix matches at the biggest tournament

What are others views

I honestly think the refereeing of that match was highly dubious last night.
Given the recent allegations re Qatar I am beginning to wonder.

FIFA and many top organisations are full of corrupt and greedy people, no doubt about it. Whether that extends to match fixing at the opening game of the world cup, that I'm not so sure about. The ref isn't exactly new, he reffed games at the 2010 WC too. Think it was just a poor performance.

Refereeing at the world cup has always been a mixed bag due to using refs from countries with a poor level of league football and refs out their depth with the pressure of games like these.More down to inexperience at the top level IMO.

Should the level of football come in to it Stanley as to me a foul is a foul no matter if its the Afgan or premier league. Appreciate that different continents and countries have their own brand of footie which can be interpreted in different ways but yesterdays pen as an example was not a pen no matter what country your referring style originates from that's not experience that's just plain appalling decision making

I think the ref was simply fooled by Fred going down like he did......it happens.

Don't get me wrong, I would gladly watch England go all the way to the final instead of some popular/favourite team that is expected to win it by punters and bookies, would make the whole thing much more interesting. Especially if the other team in the final is ... ahem, Argentina for instance

I made a comment to a mate of mine about how the first half had no diving, feigning serious injury etc, and that it was refreshing to see players stay on their feet and not go down easy. Then we had the pen incident in the second half and the cheating came back in one big hit.
Then it occurred to me, if players in a team keep going down every time they're touched, eventually the ref will take no notice when a proper offence occurs. However, if a team saves all the diving for one major incident later in the game..........bingo
