2 free transfers which would shore up our defence

Right before I go on I must stress that this post is purely based on my opinion and not in any way linked to rumours I have heard or information I have been given.

Our squad is very strong for central defenders but seriously devoid of cover for the full back positions. 2 players currently available on free transfers could resolve this problem.

    Michael Ball
Has been without a club since his release from Man City at the end of last season. Capped by England under Sven and experienced at the highest level. He is apparently on his way back from a knee injury but surely when fit would be an improvement on our current left back options. At 29 years old he should have a good few seasons left at this level and if secured on a free could turn out to be a great signing.

    Moritz Volz
Released by Fulham at the end of last season and ironically played over 20 games under JM on loan at Ipswich last season. Capped by Germany, only 26 years old and still resident of West London from his time at Fulham. Surely would provide excellent competition for Peter Ramage at right back and would definitely offer more going forward.

Both players can be signed on a permanent basis during the transfer window as they are free agents. I personally think these 2 guys are exactly what we need in terms of defensive cover.

I agree they would or could solve our probs at full back, but Jimbo knows Voltz from his time at Ipswich and seeing as he's on a free and we havent gone for him he must either not fancy him or worse still........rate Ramage! Christ we have real probs if its the latter. With Ball i bet he's looking for prem wages, something we cannot afford and i wouldnt want the club to be paying anyway.

Like it, not sure of the salaries they'd command being used to prem wages, but would definitely improve what is a very weak area at the club.

The argument always is that right now they aren't picking up a salary so £10-£15k a week is better than nothing at all.

Both would bring experience and quality and we would arguably have the best defence and midfield in the league if they did sign.

I still can't work out why these two haven't been signed up unless there is a fitness doubt.

Just seen that Volz got 7 yellow cards in 22 appearances for Ipswich and they did let 30 goals in these 22 matches (only 4 clean sheets) maybe Magilton doesn't rate him? Obviously won't be to blame for all the goals but he was/is a very good player and would be very good competition for Ramage.

I think there is a definite fitness doubt about Michael Ball. He has struggled with a Medial Ligament injury for a while and I think he is still coming back from surgery!

Michael Ball would be a HUGE improvement on Borrowdale.

both good shouts. right back not a priority if legs is going to be shifted there i suppose but certainly think it might be worth offering ball a cheeky pay as you play deal to prove his fitness. has he taken back his registration so he's a completely free agent?
