Punters like Real, punters like Becks and after Barca/Bayern domination Real punters are desperate to like Bale. Not convinced Nike makes much difference, considering during Becks era Real were Adidas.

In any event I'm not sure what Real does should influence us, in the same way my work team shouldn't be influenced by QPR.

I suppose I was clumsily making 2 points....im not saying we are a club who can sell as many shirts as real or other giants...but we don't spend as much money...
the point is its a required part of revenue...which any investor will want to take full advantage of...the more shirts that are sold, the more the manufacturer pays in sponsorship...
also the main kit sponsor pays more based on shirt sales..no to mention the profit to the club from direct sales or royalties...

my other point is connected to that...the average punter ie not a hardcore fan but someone with a developing interest in say asia or America, if they are considering buying a shirt,
will be averagely more likely to buy if its nike over lotto for instance....not saying its a good or bad thing...it just is what it is

Fair enough 71, I'm just not sure the make of the kit has that much influence on sales.

To use your example of Real, isn't the point Adidas want to be connected to Real to expand its brand rather than Real needing Adidas to sell more shirts. In the same way Nike cloth major sports stars such as Tiger Woods etc. Its part of Nikes domination and connection to success and that's why they pay fortunes.
I'm not a marketing man but what shifts shirts IMHO is success (that's why you see loads of Barca, Chelsea, utd), tradition (Arsenal, spurs) and teams with big stars (real with ronaldo and us with Park )not the make of the shirt.
Adidas or whoever kits Chelsea are getting global exposure by being associated with them as do Samsung, what Chelsea get in return is a big pay deal that smaller brands can't compete with.
Also often Clubs have kits from companies that are also main sponsors of their main players, such as Barca wear Nike and Messi wears Nike boots, Adidas kit real and Zidane and Becks were Adidas. I think Bale is Adidas as is reals kit.
Liverpool have a weird kit maker this year but I suspect will still shift loads because of who they are not who tailors their kit.

I think nike and addidas are both predominant, they need the clubs to stay that way and the clubs need them. same way football needs tv, tv needs football.

youre right, the key is success. you may not be susceptible to branding, im not either, but a huge amount of consumers are. by the way, I would be equally happy to have adidas
and I think that would bring an equal brand advantage to shirt sales....but like you say the real driver or catalyst is success on the pitch

Yeah you've got a point, maybe the far and middle east and Asian market the brand is a factor and if it is then why go against it.
Looking forward to some great games in September, going to find my blue/thin white line almost cycle top style View From Compaq shirt to go to the Birmingham game in, that was a shirt

If Adidas or Nike make the kit, wouldn't the kit be more available in sports shops?

I must admit I haven't bought a kit for years but when I was a kid the only place you could buy a shirt was in the club shop? (About 3 months after the season started)

I guess if its Nike then there is more chance of the sports shops picking it up easier. It will be in the Nike catalogue so they just need to probably tick a few boxes.

Our first "silky" kit was the white short/blue shorts combo from 1949-1955 with the deep "V" neck and Hammersmith badge. Designed specifically to look good under floodlights.

In terms of kit manufacturers - adidas and Nike's global dominance is on the wane. Puma have completely tied up Africa and most of Africa's "name" players Eto'o, Adebayor, Drogba etc on sportswear deals and take over Arsenal next summer, one of the world's top 5 selling shirts. Under Armour and Warrior are huge in the States, Under Armour's share price and reach have rocketed and they've taken their first foray's in to the European football market - UA had a practice run at Hannover and then tied up Spurs on a huge contract and Warrior have Liverpool (4th highest selling shirt in the world) and Sevilla and Macron and Kappa are making serious in-roads into the Italian markets.
