I was asked by garyqpr4eva to write this thread as he wondered since the "money" men have come in how successful our managers in comparison with each other have been.
Please remember the varying situation these managers found themselves in and therefore the achievements although do differ need to be put into context for a fair comparison. For instance Luigi De Canio took over a team at the bottom of the league and then had to manage a completely new XI after that January. Dowie had a pre season but had to deal with the likes of Ledesma, Parejo and De Carmine being forced upon him. Sousa, like De Canio, didn't have a pre season but took the team over in a more favourable position (league standing) than De Canio. Magilton had a pre season, Hart and Harford took over a team which after "Buzsaky-Gate" were in turmoil and Warnock (again without a pre season) took a team who had not kept a clean sheet in half a season nor had won a match in quite some time.
PPG = Points Per Game
De Canio - P34, W12, D11, L11, GF50, GA 45, PTS 47, PPG 1.38
Dowie - P12, W5, D3, L4, GF13, GA12, PTS 18, PPG 1.50
Sousa - P23, W7, D11, L5, GF22, GA19, PTS 32, PPG 1.39
Magilton - P20, W7, D7, L6, GF33, GA29, PTS 28, PPG 1.40
After Magilton & Before Warnock - P12, W2, D3, L7, GF10, GA22, PTS 9, PPG 0.75
Warnock - P14, W5, D5, L4, GF15, GA14, PTS 20, PPG 1.43
These stats show the importance of the above paragraph. Context is everything. Dowie did have some players forced upon him but he also had a pre season and a team starting equal with the other 23 teams. Whereas Warnock had no pre season and adopted a team who had just lost 6 of the last 7 matches. Dowie had Blackstock, Warnock had Simpson. De Canio had Buzsaky, Sousa had Routledge but other than Dowie also having Buzsaky none of the other managers had the other players. So once again a comparison is possible but there are key factors which makes one managers record better than anothers.
The alarming stat in all of this is the goals for category. We've had the likes of Blackstock, De Carmine, Agyemang, Vine, Simpson, Taraabt etc and other than De Canio all of the other managers have struggled in getting us to score. De Canio's lower points per game ratio is due his inability in keeping clean sheets. No point scoring 2 if you are going to let in 3. All of the managers including Dowie ended with a PPG under the ratio required to finish in the top 6 despite where the were when their reign ended or how they did when they tookover during a season. The average PPG required for a top 6 finish for the last 5 seasons is 1.608 - Dowie's average would have meant although we were in the top 6 during his time we would have still finished 5 points off 6th place. All other managers records have to date been worse than this and none of them would have even been close to a top 6 finish.
