They sort out sponsorship deals, local appearances (often for charity and mostly for free), they will find out which clubs might be interested in their player who might otherwise miss out, they have a network of people in the game to go to if needed for various reasons, they are a mentor and listen to problems the player may have...

Any professional sportsperson, artist, musician, actor etc has an agent. It is extremely hard to do all the jobs yourself whilst you get on with whatever itis you do. Also, having an agent negotiate for you also should get you a better deal and should take a lot of any argument and anger away from you. So if you want a better deal and the club aren't happy about it, your agent takes muh of the flak and you can get on with playing etc.

We all know there are rogue agents and bungs etc, but there are also good agents who care about their players' welfare and actually do a good job for them.

I find al this furore about them ridiculous.
You're not an agent by any chance, are you?

      Insightful post Stedders.

Ha not at all. But as with any industry, there are fantastic people and there are complete ******s. Agents who are worth their money are the ones that have the genuine best interest of the players at heart.

How can any player be expected to negotiate their own contracts, a mistake in which could cost hundreds of thousands of pounds or damage a career? HOw can any player be expected to be an expert in various areas of business. Most players are not highly educated and need genuine and good advice.

A lot of young players can find solace in an agent and the group of people around them in difficult times. When they are not being picked, or are experienceing difficulties.

I am not saying all agents are good, decent, or fair. But equally some are excellent and genuine. There has to be a balanced view on it all.

Three excellent agents who I know pretty well...

Phil Smith, Leon Angel and Robert Segal.

Good guys with their head in the right place.

This is the entire reason the Chairman resigned yesterday. He doesn't want to pay silly money to agents and has been disgusted by some of their behaviours and the problems they deliberately whip up for personal gain.

I guess the Board didn't agfree with him. I wish more clubs would follow his example and unite against agents - they are one of the reason we have to pay stupid money to watch football nowdays.

There is a thread about it in the non QPR section.

I think you are naive if you genuinely believe that.

Can't get my head round it at all. Player can have whatever agent he wants and then effing well pay him. Baffles me why club pays the agent to drive a good deal for the player????? Still, it's football isn't it so normal economics don't apply.

I only know two agents. Both fantastic people. But because they are so nice they get screwed a lot.
