The sand bouncing up and the Adidas Tango ball just being fizzed around without a bobble in sight. Goalkeepers with their tracky bottoms on. Great days and a brilliant team.

Never really took to the plastic myself, made game seem a bit sterile, however we were just as good away from home, plastic or grass Rangers were class, so this unfair advantage moan by other sides didn't really work, whilst Venables was manager we were outstanding home or away.

I think we badly messed up by putting down a multi-purpose pitch instead of a dedicated football surface. I remember going on the pitch at the end of the season and being shocked at how it felt.... it was really springy and hollow feeling - it was like it was made of plywood and gave me the impression I could stamp my foot through it if I tried. It must have undoubtedly felt strange and disconcerting to away teams not used to it.
A highly respected journalist told me that he was 99% certain our players had it written into their contracts that they were not allowed to criticise the pitch despite several apparently hating it and worrying how it was wrecking their joints.
