  • Decent display - and Ollie got the tactics right

Went to the game yesterday. Thought we played very well overall, although Burton were poor. First half was fairly even and scrappy, but felt in the second we really took control of the match and could have won by three or four. Washington took his goal well and caused them problems throughout. Oteh was lively, although ball control and finishing need a bit of work (missed a sitter in the first minute). Nevertheless, great to see him get on the scoresheet and sure his confidence will improve. Midfield trio of Freeman, Scowen and Luongo really managed to impose themselves on the match and controlled the flow of play. Also impressed by Onuoha who put in a generally solid display. Burton didn't trouble us much; they seemed to hoof the ball forward at every opportunity, which we dealt with comfortably. Only criticism would be the way we lost concentration after scoring the first - a bit of a soft goal to give away.

Hoping we can build on this victory and don't fall into the usual Holloway trap of winning a couple of matches and then going on a six-game losing streak. Interestingly, I spoke to one of the Burton coaches after the match who said Ollie got the tactics "spot on" and admitted they struggled against his system. Perhaps more tactically astute than we think (although not getting too carried away!)

Agreed godfather, think otehs miss, it looked like the ball just bobbled up as he pulled the trigger tbh, but a good watch that was yesterday.

The pitch looked fairly churned up; could that have contributed towards Oteh's miss in the first min, or do you think it was just a rush of blood to his head?

No it certainly bobbled up abit as spotted it in real time as it happened, shame as if it hadnt he could have burried it, like the pass laid onto him last week which was abit too heavy, but another close chance

Possibly. I just felt he rushed things a little bit, but these things happen. Overall he looks promising. Lots of pace and enthusiasm - and got himself on the scoresheet.

Holloway is not a tactical genius, but he is surely not tactically inept. The tactical part is probably a weaker side of his management and the motivation skills the stronger side, but this black/white sort of thinking - labeling him as tactically clueless, is unfair and actually not serious. You don't gain two promotions to the Premier League if you are tactically inept.

I think he got the tactics right both against Cardiff and Burton. He received a lot of abuse for picking Smyth against Cardiff and Washington against Burton, but both turned out to be very smart and just the right choice, not at least from a tactically point of view. However, I am honestly not sure this wing back system is the right choice, giving the fact we hardly have any proper wing backs in our squad, just conventional full backs and conventional wingers.

Ive watched their goal a couple of times and cant really see much wrong with defence for it.
Dyer just did really well and any challenge he would of just gone over for a pen anyway.

At least Holloway learnt from our home game and used faster players. Think he was lucky Cousins got injured and played Furlong instead. But one up to you Ollie.

Speed and pace have been missing for far too long. Just watched Liverpool v Man City; speed and pace all over the pitch. Believe our team should be built around it; means playing the Otehs and the Smyths and the Washingtons and the Furlongs more; the Onouhas and the Bidwells less. Smith still a great late game sub for both offense and defense.

How bad were Burton as everyone has slammed them and got be honest and say all the times I have seen them last two three seasons they have looked decent enough and a tidy side. Have they really gone backwards that much

Worst team we've played this season IMO. Clough admitted afterwards they just didn't turn up, conceded possession cheaply which we punished them for and which he gave credit to us for. They'd gone into the game in good form but said our tactics worked on the day.

You can only beat what's put in front of you, but Knocker's stat on the other thread is certainly encouraging, and a welcome change for us too.

Burton have always relied on loan players. Previous years were good this years aren't up to standard. Plus their record buy is out all season.
