  • The Pawel Mystery...

When Pavel first established his sea legs at QPR he was fast, aggressive to goal, and pounding balls into the middle of the box for others to propel goalward. These days, he seems tentative, lacks pace on the ball, and seems hard-pressed to deliver crosses. Is he injured or just lost his special touch he once had to, like Freeman, creates hope every time he touches the ball? If this doesnt change soon, believe we need an alternative like Walker, Samuel, or even the now lightly-used Manning. Thoughts?

He's being miss used unfortunately and it's now reflecting in his performances

He is not a WB and never will be a WB yes could play that role as s stop gap but appears he's now playing there as his set position and it's doing him no favours

What surprises we is when fans put up there preferred side they also put him at WB why????

He's an out and out winger so he's plays there or I am afraid he should not be playing. The phrase square pegs in round holes comes to mind it's the same situation as when we had Isla. We have decent players but weaken them

He plays on the wing for Poland but Holloway has decided he is a RWB FFS! The result is he is half the player we are used to watching. Another act of genius from our manager.

No mystery mate, he's being played out of position. If we want to see the best of him, we need to play Pawel out wide in a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1.

bang on. both he and bidwell are being asked to cover 2 positions each. no wonder they are both struggling.

never liked this 3 at the back nonsense. harry tried it too and he jacked it in after half a dozen games.

The problem is that with Pawel and Bidwell playing as wing backs they are receiving the ball too far back and are crossing from deep positions. Against Burton for instance they did not get near the penalty area when they crossed and these are much easier for defenders to defend.
Pawel is at his best when taking defenders on and should last season he was looking up and picking his target. This season it just seems to be a hopeful cross from deep into the box that is cleared.

exactly, and the reason why he does not take his man on and get to the byline is because, if he loses the ball or a cross goes to the opposition, he will have to dash back 100 odd yards to defend the right back position.

i dont blame him tbh, i would be doing the same as he is doing this season. this wingback nonsense has to stop.

WB role is a specialist position you can't just shoehorn someone into it

well the problem is we play with 3 center midfielders, if we played 442 we would have to drop either scowen, luongo or freeman. we got loads of midfielders so got no choice

And Harry actually had a better squad of players to play that way, with Isla being a specialist right wing back. We have literally no wing backs in this squad.

I'm with you though mate. Really not a fan of 3 at the Back. I see it as a really flawed system. I know a few teams in the top flight are doing well playing that way, but they have the advantage of having better quality players who are good enough to adapt. At this level, I'd sooner keep it simple with a flat back 4.

That why the manager earns the big bucks to make the tough decisions

Freeman can play anywhere across the midfield. Could even play him off the front man in a 4-5-1. All would be better bets than trying to convince ourselves that Bidwell and Pawel are effective playing wing back roles.

You would have to put Freeman LW. Keep his width when we are attacking and drops in narrow with the CM's when we dont have the ball, it's not rocket science.... Luongo and Scowen stay CM.

As has already been stated, Pav is a winger, not a wingback and his defensive responsibilities have blunted his attacking prowess, again not rocket science. Kyle Walker he aint.
