  • We are going to struggle unless we get a striker in before long we are just not taking anywhere near enough of the chances !! How long will the good football wer'e playing last ? As long as it will take for the players to lose heart and have their spirit dented if we don't start to score enough goals to get points ! This is something the board can't ignore

    • The takeaways from yesterday's match. (1) We are already better than last season -- more pace, more midfield control, more chances to score; (2) Mackie and Washington are all out hustlers, but neither has a real scorers touch within the box; will need a midfielder or two who can provide that; (3) Love Freeman and Scowen, and Pawel when healthy, but don't expect them to put a lot of goals on the board; ergo, we need a scoring midfielder who's not yet on the roster; (4) The defense is adequate at best, especially on the wings -- Perch is aging and unable to keep pace with speedy offenders; Furlong has seemingly stopped improving despite increased opportunities, and Bidwell (though he had a decent game yesterday) can't cross or score if his life/career depended on it.

Yeah but we aren't gonna win them all, and realistically a draw v Hull is a good result.

        • It's not beyond the realms of sanity to say we could be 7 goals better off but all our good approach will soon come to nothing once opposing realise their best option is to let us play knowing there isn't a great risk we will put our chances away regularly enough so they can hit us on the break

I fancy us to beat hull at home, aslong as our injuries arent too bad, but a worry if pavs out, key man & we need sylla back!

Helps that Hernandez is out but still a decent side.

Woah Woah Woah, calm down there lad! It's early days! We won our first two league games last season home & away scoring 5 and conceding 0, and look how that turned out...

                • Think we controlled the game until Wzsolek got injured. LuaLua played out of position was a total waste of space. Furlong and Smith likewise.

It was an odd sub with hindsight. Could have brought on either Furlong or Manning and gone like for like. Doubt Lua Lua has ever played wing back before, and I actually got really confused as to what we were trying to do in terms of a formation from then onwards.

I think that is a very good point, although knowing Rangers we will play really well and lose and we still won't have any idea!

It was. Sometimes it looked like he was playing defensive midfield.

Haha as I said I wasn't really adding up points just meant we were getting worse.

Whilst this type of defending also needs drastic improvement from our defence, far too often as I've said above, our defence give attackers too much space in our own half when on or near our box, they don't stop crosses often enough, whether a player is running at pace or like most times has an absolute age on the ball to look up and make a cross because our defenders are not pressing nor tight enough to the player to stop the cross when an attacking player is out wide or pushed out wide.

Defenders sole job is to defend, if they can't do this then they just become passengers in the side.
Midfielders cannot be blamed for how poor our defenders are IMO. Most of the time they are up and down, they can't be expected to be everywhere doing everything - especially not the defenders job for them in getting tackles in or pushing a player out wide when they were up the other end of the pitch attacking for us, say 30 seconds ago.

If it's also the midfielders job to push an opposing attacking wide-man out wide and stop crosses, when he was up the other end of the pitch 30 seconds ago, then what is the point of having defenders.

Our midfield is a lot stronger than our defence and it's the latter that needs strengthening, drastically - surely most can see this.
I didn't say anything about our midfielders being responsible for pushing their wide men out wide, although they may have to depending on the situation.
My point was based on their second goal.
If their player picks the ball up in midfield and runs at our defence he should be tracked by one of our midfielders, end of.
If they can get a decent tackle in then fine, otherwise show him the touchline or as a lady resort foul the €unt before he gets within 35 yards of goal. simples.
Ask any centre back his pet hate and it's nearly always having a player dribbling the ball at him with momentum/pace.
One of the main midfielders jobs, or at least the defensively minded ones, is to try and prevent that situation developing.

                            • That geezer who scored the screamer is a loan from Southampton.
Wish one of our loan signings from prem clubs would score a goal like that for us.
