    agree, it was a bizarre appointment to anyone outsided the FA. I'm pretty sure they wanted Wenger who turned them down, although in hindsight that decision looks more of a poor call with each passing week - he would have had an easier ride with England than Arsenal. I would have had GS as caretaker until the end of term and looked again with all options open, Southgate included.

    On the plus side his u21 managerial record is reasonable and he took Boro further than anyone else had before or since. He is also more flexible tactically than both his immediate predecessors. Thought the kid he brought in who played at the back was excellent and I don't think Sam or Roy would have done that (or recalled Jermaine). The real test for Southgate will be how he and his team cope with pressure when the going gets tough....
