An Independence vote in Scotland is an enormous gamble because there is no guarantee they would be allowed to join the EU. Spain for one is against it because they are worried that the Basques and other minorities in Spain would then want the same.

Quite surprised at the level of vitriol towards Gove on here. Would like to see more detailed reasons rather than the fact that some just don't like him. Listened to his entire speech and thought it was by far and away the best pitch for a leader of a British political party I've ever heard. I suppose only a victory and a bit of time will determine if it was simply well chosen words or has any substance.

As for Sturgeon being impressive in any way at all ...

Gove has been drifiting in the betting markets since Boris pulled out yesterday, Angela Leadsom seems to be the closest rival to Theresa May, but Leadsom was part of the team campaigning for Brexit.

I actually thought it was a very good speech by Gove this morning (I was surprised) not sure how well it will go down north of the border when he talked about having a fair distribution across the union, it is well known that he disagrees with the Barnett formula so the Scots might get a big reduction should he become the PM. Also not sure that the Scots can vote for independence, oil is under $50 per barrel, compared to their financial estimates they brought forward this is between an 8 and 12% shortfall in their income, as Sturgeon was planning on running a deficit anyway, and EU rules not allowing a nation to have more than a 3% deficit, she would have to cut the education budget in half, obviously this wouldn't happen but the sheer drop off of revenue would mean plenty of tough times.

Did anyone hear his leadership speech this morning? I was quite impressed tbh. He came across more like a socialist than a tory. Promised an extra £100 million a week to the NHS by 2020 too.
