  • The March to Wembley

Time to lift the mood and recycle an old thread

One of my earliest memories as a child was sitting on my dads shoulders up to in 1982 marching with the Rangers to Wembley before he handed me to my mother to continue marching on. That year the ole man destroyed some of my mums best bedsheets by spray painting them with slogans such as 'Big Bad Bob Bites your Balls' and hanging them outside the house on Blomefontein Road for all the fans marching past.

I have seen the photos from 67 of the coffin carrying on Blom with the Al Jolson lookalike and Klu Klux Clan dressed fan (not politically correct I know but it did happen) and I remember the march in 86 because I marched all the way .

I think the QPR march to Wembley is legendary, I know not of another club who does anything like this and whilst I think we nicked the idea of some Cardiff fans spotted carrying a coffin to play Arsenal at Paddington station a few years earlier, we've made it our thing to do.

In this day and age I think such an event would attract a lot of media coverage, almost taking the viewer back to a bygone era when football fans were not all Sky Sports Generation Cardboard Cut Outs. The next time QPR march to Wembley I hope to see it go down in folklore as an event etched into football fans memory up and down the land.

Should QPR reach another Wembley Final will we march again, how many would join the precession, what is the official route, what are your memories???

Anyone care to put a figure 67. 82 & 86 of those fans who marched?

Nice subject for a thread, I was too young for 67 and stupidly went by tube for the 82 & 85 finals.

I would love to walk to Wembley after pie & double mash and a couple of pints in the Springbok.
I have supported Rangers for 55 seasons, since March 1969.

We drove, stopped off at the Post Office club in Sudbury Hill but we drove past the hoards of Rangers and it was tremendous. As a 7 year old in 82' and an 11 year old in 86' hanging out the car window and having all the Rangers fans patting me on the head and shaking my hand. Great childhood memories. Just one more final please Rangers.....

Great memories of the 2 marches. Everyone ended up in the greyhound pub top of Harrow road I think. We were all outta our brains by the time we got to Wembley !!

Too young in '67, but marched as a young man from South Africa Rd to Wembley stadium in '82, and '86.

walked with the ol' man and his pals for the 82 game and remember fighting in that big pub on the left before you get into wembley(spurs fans got a west london welcome). never walked for the replay(not sure anyone did).
got up really early on that morning in 86 and headed to meet my mates at a well known pub in ladbroke grove-when i got there it was packed to the rafters. we had a couple of pints and waited for the latimer road lot to meet up with us before walking firm handed up to the corner of grove and harrow road. stopped for more beer. the dwarf was running around trying to organise everyone. by the time we set off on the march to scrubbs lane they was a good couple of thousand rangers from grove/latimer/harrow road/queens park etc with more joining all the time from kensal green and surrounding areas. when we got to scrubbs lane we merged with all the lot that had walked from bush/white city etc. harlesden did'nt know what hit it-untold fans ran into an offy and took what they wanted-shop was left with a few bottles of wine(lucky fulham were'nt playing or the owner would have been left with nothing). not sure of the numbers that walked but it stretched as far as the eye could see-the atmosphere was amazing(until the game started!!!)
honestly believe if we got to wembley again we would have much bigger numbers because back then it was word of mouth and only people local to the areas i mentioned.

Doubt the OB would let everyone march to Wembley nowadays and even if they did it would be under a massive police escort

OB, by that I take it you mean the Old Bill?

Are they still going? I haven't seen one in weeks around here.

Seen plenty of the cheaper alternatives though, the one's that look like they couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag, and wear uniforms like traffic wardens, useless karnts.
