They say defences win you titles and strikers win you matches but how did the team who won the title do compared with us?
Did the defence win Wolves the title?
Wolves:
Played: 46
Conceded:52
Clean Sheets: 14
Number of times 1 goal or less was conceded in a match: 33
QPR:
Played: 46
Conceded:44
Clean Sheets: 18
Number of times 1 goal or less was conceded in a match: 33
QPR kept 4 more clean sheets than Wolves and conceded 8 goals fewer so overall our defence was stronger. Which is remarkable considering that the majority of people don't rate either Delaney or Ramage.
So how did Wolves do compared to QPR in front of goal?
Wolves:

Scored: 80
Goals at Home: 44
Goals Away: 36
Failed to score: 7 times
Scored 2 or more in a match: 27 times
QPR:
Played: 46
Scored: 42
Goals at Home: 28
Goals Away: 14
Failed to score: 21 times
Scored 2 or more in a match: 12 times
Wolves scored more goals at Molineux in their 23 home matches then we did in our entire season. Wolves scored more goals away from home then we did at Loftus Road.
Wolves drew 0-0 once compared to the 10 times we did. Overall we drew 16 matches to Wolves 9. Big if but if we had turned those 7 extra draws into wins we would have finished with an extra 14 points and tonight we would have been playing Sheffield United in the play offs.
Wolves won 14 matches in which the opposition also scored compared to the 7 times in which we did - Wolves succeeded to finish teams off even when they conceded in a match whereas we turned winning positions into draws.
25 matches out of 46 we either drew or lost by a single goal. Big if again but if we had turned 5 of the 9 narrow losses into draws (or 55% of them) and 9 of the 16 draws into wins (or 56%) we would have finished 2nd. Basically if we had scored an extra goal in just 14 of the 46 matches and turned draws into wins and losses into draws we would have finished in the top two.
Lots of big ifs above but with the defence as tight as it is, it just shows what small margins we are talking about and the importance of scoring goals.
