  • T’was the depth of night

All was dark and silent, and my mind turned to FFP.

    As you do.

As there are no games right now nor in the foreseeable future, what happens to clubs’ income streams? Match day revenue has dwindled to nothing. No programme sales, no food and beverage sales, and no away team supporters paying for attendance. The sometimes present home supporter can’t make their occasional visit and boost revenue by their ticket purchase. No income except for season ticket holders paid in advance?

But what is the situation there? They have contracted with the club and paid for the right to attend 23 home games. What is the position where the club have only delivered 16 games? What are the contractual rights of the season ticket holder? Can they demand a refund of about 1/3 of the ticket price? (OK, some would waive the refund out of loyalty).

Roll it over as part payment for the new season’s ticket? But that will reduce the club’s future revenue and deny them the cash flow over the summer when receipts in (from new season ticket purchases) are diminished but payments out aren’t.

There is a modest saving on matchday costs.

With the hit to revenue, but largely the same static costs, the profitability of the club dwindles, and with most clubs that will translate into loss. Will that loss exceed the permissible loss for a season under FFP? Will it be taken into consideration in the 3 year limit? Will the League allow clubs some lee-way in the allowable loss?

And what happens about the league? The Media have contracted with them to deliver a certain number of games. What happens if the League fails to deliver that agreed number? Can the Media claw back some of their stake?

Thankfully I then fell asleep again.
