  • Questions about strikers, recruitment and progress

When is a reasonable timeframe to be recruiting an up and coming striker, or strikers plural?

The context: Conor Washington has been gone since August 2018. Idrissa Sylla since January 2019. Thus, we’ve had 18 months, at least, to have scouted new, young, promising strikers from the lower leagues. Realistically, we’ve had even longer as the club have long since known Washington and Sylla were not good enough, and not being retained.

Some questions: what has our scouting department been up to during the last 18 months? Why have we not made any progress in the striker department? Why have we not taken a chance on a lower league strikers or strikers? Are we being too cautious because of the failings of the Washington transfer?

The role of key club positions and major responsibilities:

The role of the CEO is to balance the books whilst still being competitive. Progress being made.

The role of the technical director and coaches is to improve young players. Progress being made.

The role of the manager is to mange, coach and adopt a clear style of play which we have lacked for years. Progress being made.

The role of the DoF is to....? Identify gaps in the team/squad, work with the manger and scouting, and bring new players in? Are we making enough progress here? We have several alarming gaps in the side and have done for some time, beyond just strikers. Centre midfield, full backs, and centre halves.

The club knew, or should of known, the likelihood of Nakki Wells staying was low probability. 15 goals will attract plenty of clubs in the championship and did. Where was our contingency plan? And if we didn’t have one, which we clearly didn’t, why not? Who is responsible?

I think your point about Washington is a valid one . We got our fingers badly burnt with him and it seems we are now very cautious when it comes to recruiting strikers from the lower leagues. When it comes to strikers we seem to have gone down the no risk route which considering our ffp budget is understandable.Premier league cast offs in Wells and Hugill pretty much guarantees goals .I agree with you though this can’t go on for ever and this summer will be interesting in that respect .

Some very good questions.......... Haven't a clue what the answers are, unless it's simply down to money, or lack of it.
When you think the dof was a top int striker you'd think it'd be that position we are well stocked in.

Ivan Toney would of cost around 5 million. Hardly a punt at that price.

A very interesting post, and I couldn't agree more. I have been disappointed with our striker situation for some time. FFP aside, I was surprised we didn't take a chance on a lower league striker or one from overseas.

We were always going to be short up front come the end of the season, when our loan strikers go back. Getting a striker in mid season would have been a good time to try them within the team.

Spending in the lower leagues has always been a gamble Freeman for example for £300k was a steal . Then you look at Goss and Wheeler for a combined £1 million and that’s a disaster for a club in our position.

And if we had brought him in and he failed the club would have been slaughtered for not learning from the Washington signing , which is why they feel the loan market is best for us right now .

We had no money to spend in the Januar 2019 transfer window. We put together more or less an entire new squad during the 2019 summer window on a total transfer fee budget of £50.000. We have once again put behind us a window without spending, in order to keep our ammunition for the upcoming transfer window dry. By 1 July 2020 we are out on the three year FFP rolling interval that includes the devastating loss of the 2017/2018 season and we have again freedom to spend a bit.

I think the higher hierarchy of the club has considered it better to sign a couple of good young hungry strikers for a couple of million pounds each during the upcoming summer window than to spend at inflated prices during this recent window, also having in mind the fact we are probably sailing very close to the wind in terms of FFP.

On the back of this I believe it is unfair to accuse Les or any other key decision makers for lack of acquisitions of strikers or players for any other positions for the sake.

The fact is that we are doing amazing given the financial constraints we are under. I simply cannot understand the criticism that keeps coming up with reference to lack of ambition and lack of spending. It is like criticizing a poor working man for not buying a Rolls Royce so he can move around in some style.

Wash was bought after a purple patch , toney has been hitting the net on a regular basis ... And everyone has a price and is for sale if the £ is right

But surely the real question is we didn’t identify Toney BEFORE he went to P’Boro and became in-demand and want 5-7m. His record of 1 in 2 as a young lad aged 18-21 in the lower leagues is impressive. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Toney

Now he’s 23 and our of our league.

Who is the next Toney type and why aren’t we finding them?

Well said , there are numerous posters on here that need to read this post carefully . I doubt they will though as it’s easier to forget what the club has been going through for the last few years.

On the other hand Toney had been at Newcastle and never got a look in .Why accuse us of not buying him when he has never played above league 1 level and no other club has taken a punt on him .The Washington scars run deep for a club in our financial position.

Some very good points there especially the DoF.

Where are the strikers? He was one himself so he should be able to have some input into finding strikers. We all knew about Sylla and Washington plus knew that last season that Hemed was not the answer.

Peterborough seem to find strikers quite easily as do Brentford.

The lack of recruitment of these players is one of the reasons why fans question the need of a DoF. Hopefully QPR will stay up this season but recruitment has to improve. I am ok with loaning players but we must not go into next season without owning at least 1 competent goalscorer because as we have painfully seen they can be recalled leaving the team in trouble.

As for this season, Oteh has to be given a chance and then released if he is not up the level of Championship football.
