  • That was coming

MARK Warburton witnessed his side stun Cardiff City with a 6-1 win before declaring: “That result has been coming.”

The R’s ran riot from start to finish, with Nahki Wells (3), Bright Osayi-Samuel (2) and Ebere Eze on the scoresheet.

It was the first time QPR hit six goals in a league game since a 6-0 win over Crystal Palace in 1999, and Warburton told www.qpr.co.uk: “I always have a lot of respect for Neil Harris and every Cardiff team but a scoreline like that has been coming for us, in terms of us creating chances and not getting our rewards.

“The stats today were similar to our recent games but today we were far more clinical. We moved the ball really quickly and we looked positive with our decision making.

“We knew we had to switch the ball from side to side against a good Cardiff side with their physicality.

“We had to defend with a real passion and all over the park we gave good displays - from one to 11, we looked really strong.

“I thought we deserved to win by that number of goals because of the number of chances we created and how good we looked going forward.”

Warburton played Geoff Cameron at right back with Lee Wallace coming in at left back, and he explained: “It was us thinking ‘how do we deal with their physical threat?’

“Do we put Jordan (Hugill) in and go two up top with his physicality? We have ball players with the likes of Brighty and Ilias but they are very small in stature compared to the Cardiff players.

“Dom Ball has played at right-back and Geoff has played there too for Stoke, so it was an idea to put him there and use his physicality at set-pieces.

“He’s a good ball player too and it worked out well in the end.”

Wells ended a run of nine games without a goal by bagging a stunning hat-trick, and Warburton was delighted by the reaction of his striker.

“I keep saying to people, no player ever means to miss or make a mistake,” said the R’s chief.

“They are human beings – and sometimes you go through really good periods and sometimes you go through tough periods.

“That was Nahki’s response today and he showed his quality. Likewise, Jordan was scoring at the start of the season but they are two quality players that we have.

Meanwhile, Osayi-Samuel was a constant threat in the attacking third and Warburton added: “Brighty has that lovely raw attribute of sheer pace and power.

“He can terrify any defender and he is learning how best to apply that to impact the game.

“That is the key for him; where does he receive the ball? Can he get on the half turn? Can he beat someone with his first touch? Does he have to go short to then go long?

“All of these variables he is thinking about.

“He hasn’t had the benefit of an academy education so all credit to him. He is learning so quickly and is getting a lot of support from staff at the club – people like Chris Ramsey and Paul Hall.

“A lot of work is being done and he is now understanding how good he can be.

“There is still a lot of work to do and that is the same with Ebere [Eze], Ilias [Chair] and Ryan [Manning]. They have got to keep learning and show a real desire to keep learning the game.

“When Bright plays like that and gets people off their seats in the stadium it is a great sight.”

Warburton has belief in what his squad can achieve, adding: “This team has good character, a good work ethic, a lot of desire and the recent results haven’t reflected the quality of our performances.

“We have to make sure this team gets their rewards because if we do then the belief grows.

“If we can create high-quality chances then we are a good team and come the end of the season we’ll be in a good place if we keep creating them.”
