  • Terrific effort from Croatia, but France were a different class.it was a wonderful world cup with a fitting final to end it

    • Very impressed with France at the back, Loris notwithstanding.

Set up spot on vs Croatia.

      • Firstly I have to say that from a musical perspective I appreciated that England fans used the tune to the classic 'September' by Earth Wind and Fire. It works really well as a football chant.

I'm also delighted that Harry Kane has returned with the Golden Boot. That's at least some consolation.

Again I have to agree with Hal though regarding GS' tactical shortcomings at this level. Further, we could and should have beaten Croatia had we put away those relatively straightforward chances in the 1st half, and just knew that would come back to bite us. Getting to the semi-final was of course a great achievement and bodes well for the future, but I really hope Southgate has learn't from this experience and will have a plan B in future, which clearly Croatia's manager had in the 2nd half!

Their forwardline was very effective today. Many talented strikers, that is for sure.

We won a match on penalties after a draw.

A win on pens is still a win.

It is a draw with the progress decided by penalties.

The penalties aren't considered part of the match.

From UEFA: 'Kicks from the penalty mark to determine which club [or nation] qualifies or to determine the winners of a tie so not affect the actual result of the match'

From FIFA: 'The Kicks from the penalty mark are not part of the match'

As I was saying, England have never won a knockout match in the European Championships.

England BEAT Spain on pens. They didn't draw with Spain on pens. They WON ON PENS. Therefore, ergo, they won in the quarter final of the 1996 Euros.

Ha ha! I probably do to be honst!!

But the fact is - however unromantic it is - that England played Spain in 1996 and drew.

This is the best source for ANYTHING to do with the national team and even they have it as a draw!

No doubt if we lost on pens that would be a loss though!

Look at it this way... We have never lost to Vauxhall Motors... Have never beaten them either, admittedly, but every cloud and silver linings and all that...

I'm a bit confused as I remember celebrating along with Pyscho as Spain were knocked out of the tournament !

I can't remember anything of it as I was at Madstock in Finsbury Park getting paraletic!
