  • Cult Hero XI

With Clint Hill retiring had me wondering what my best XI would be based on cult hero status. Nothing to do with best XI or most talented just purely based on those that came and without being the most talented, managed to win the fans over.... Mine would be

    Day

    Nelsen
    Hill
    Padula

    Ainsworth
    Faurlin
    Bircham
    Mackie

    Austin

    Any other ideas?

Depends on your age group but mine would be something like

      Camp
      Bignot Shittu Hill Padula

      Ainsworth Bircham Faurlin Tarrabt Cook

      Furlong

      Subs
      Day

      Maddix
      Rowlands

Honourable shoutout for one of my favourites (even got his name on my shirt before he turned poo) McLeod.

And this is all personal reasons before people say that there were better players etc.

Different types of cult hero. I can feel a rant coming on, you've been warned.....

For me there has to be an individual element in the make up. For at least the last ten years, and probably longer, players have been muzzled, schooled in PR. Just like F1. Everybody has to be nice. No one can admit to anything. No one is gay. No one has a toot. No one uses hookers. Everyone is good, and loves children and animals. That isn't fertile ground for cult status. When you have someone who doesn't really give a fvck but is touched by genius then you have the makings. Stan had it. Adel had it. Elsewhere Gazza had it. Best had it, None of those would last long these days because ultimately they were, in different ways, a little bit out of control. And top level football fears what it can't deal with. Another story, but that's the real reason we don't have terraces......

Another type of cult hero is someone who has those attributes, but lacks the ability and makes up for it in different ways. Often by a willingness to get stuck in, the type of bloke you'd want beside you when its all gone a bit wrong...... we can all think of a few of those.

The King of all the players who played way above their ability and won the fans over was Mick Leach.

A team full of Lee Cooks !!
                    Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
                    And many more mistakes

LES FERDINAND, IT'S TIME TO GO

Gentleman Jim Langley, Tony - give it some welly - Hazell and Mark - always changing shorts - Lazarus. Not sure that Mick Leech ever won fans over, he was the boo boy for many but the willing water carrier for Rodney Marsh. One only has to read the high regard that Marsh had for him to understand the impact that he made on the pitch.

Mark Dennis is a defender I will never forget having witnessed. He could have "murdered" a norwegian defending with a nasty tackle during a match here in my country in 88 or 89. But at the same time he was also cool and quite handsome. Macca with a cigarette in the dugout was also a quite impressive sight the same summer. RIP Macca.
