  • Do we have players suited to a diamond system?

It was said before that Hart always plays a diamond and we saw it come home to roost yesterday. For the first 20 minutes we played like strangers and for most of the match we struggled to put more than 3 passes together due to lack of movement. With no target man up front to win balls in the air or hold up the ball, only one full back with any idea of how to attack and a winger not allowed to play on the wing, it was never going to work. So will he persist, will he buy players to suit the system or will he revert and play to our stengths. What do you think?

    Good post.

Personally I am not a big fan of the diamond formation especially at a club where the manager has no time to bring in the plays required to play it. If you have the same manager for a number of years who can bring in a natural holding midfielder, an attacking midfielder and two wider men then fine but if you are only doing the job for 5 minutes and you have the abuse from the fans to deal with (who all wants 4-4-2) then it is difficuly to impliment.

I personally prefer 4-2-3-1 which is similar to the diamond but gives more freedom to the creative players than the rigid diamond. Which midfielder will hold on his own? Which two will play upfront? With the players we have we are far better suited to playing a lone forward in Simpson and playing the likes of Buzsaky, Routledge and Taraabt around him. Whilst Leigertwood and Faurlin protect the defence. The diamond would mean that Agyemang comes in and either we lose the creativity of Taraabt or the extra protection of Faurlin. We should play to our strength and that is allow the front 4 to roam (like they did against Derby, Preston, Reading and Barnsley) and allow Legiertwood and Faurlin to protect the back four.

We need one big no nonsense striker, yesterday showed our lack of power up front, when the ball went down the wings. One instance Routledge was the only one in the middle to head the ball.

Many said we needed a striker and bearing in mind someone like Chopra hasn't scored for 10 games, shows they don;t always score but being 7th, its now time to press on.

so in a roundabout way your trying to say you were wrong saying we didn't need a forward in the summer (as you said many, many times as we have players scoring from midfield)

but now the penny has finally dropped, but you'd hate to admit it

we are 3 points off a play off place with the weakest forward line in the championship, just imagine where we could be if we did actually spend some money in the summer on a couple of decent strikers.

I'm saying we are 3 points off, now its time to get a striker in to help Simpson.

So glad we never wasted 2.5 on Watson aren't you??

True we do need a striker, but it doesn't need to be a "big no nonsense" type. A player with good ball skills and an eye for goal would be ideal.

Not a fan of the diamond at all, thought we played far to narrow yesterday andcreated very little as a result.

The way to solve the problem is to just buy a big lump like Leon Best to play up front. We have wingers and wide men at the club capable of beating a full back...we just don't have no one to get on the end of the ball from a cross.

We only played the diamond for 20 mins and it did not work because Watson and Faurlin failed to do their jobs, after 20 minutes of being all over the place we switched to 4-1-4-1 (with routledge hugging the wing) and settled down we then went 4-2-3-1 when ageymang was brought on and back to 4-1-4-1 for the last 15 minutes.

just as i thought, we are more suitable to the "circle formation"

To many times we get the ball out wide and there is no one in the box to get on the end of crosses.Simpson IMO needs to be playing along side a target man who he can play off. The diamond formation doesn't seem to work with the players we have got.Faurlin doesn't seem able to play on the left side, the few times he has played there he seems a bit lost. I would like to see us get a decent target man in and play 4-4-2,and put opposition defences under more pressure. At times our midfield players are to deep and we end up passing the ball backwards allowing the other team to all get behind the ball and get there defensive shape.
